Which is worse, the orange mound of peel competing with your cairn, or the billion boot erosion scar? The cola can winking beneath wild water, or the yellow seamless stream of safety cags distorting your distant ridge? The boozy bottle broken amid the boulders, or the pallid clamour of Sefton Ramblers' AGM* on your summit? Answer: The Guide Book Writer!
Yea. Okay. Gene's guilty with his little Feats For Feet, (the book's little, not the feats or feet ... see elsethere), and his Howgills attempt, see elsehere, but when it comes to guide books Wainwright's your man. The trouble with Wainwright .. he's a religion. The problem with Wainwright .. his Lakeland boundary. The solution to Wainwright .. recognise a fell for yourself, for his notion leads to the bizarre, both in and out. Mungrisdale Common! 'Nuff said! Iron Crag, though! 2000 feet & some. 200 feet aloft from Caw Fell's col. But not good enough! What? Wainwright's and the National Park's non-coincident boundaries embrace Iron Crag, while the former excludes some of his own inclusions. Also other worthies, acknowledged belatedly in The Outlying Fells. But geography has its uses, Cumbrian Mountains showing how it's done, the only question; how far east? A6? M6? Shap's too high. Lune's gorge deep may be, but squint at the brown bits on OS's old Quarter-Incher. The contour contrast east-west of Sedbergh's road to Kirkby Stephen is as obvious as it is travelling the other way. That puts the Howgill Fells in the Cumbrian Mountains, Yorkshire in Lakeland! Oh yes it does!
Doesn't alter the fact, though, that Wainwright's 13-year, solo exploration saw 214 Lakeland Fells and produced 7 hand crafted guide books. A ladle or two of whimsy perhaps, but a monumental achievement. The "Wainwrights" should be climbed.
* Gene doesn't know if Sefton Ramblers exist other than as Graham's and G's handle for any "walking club" fell encountered.

Gene's Wainwrights (starting from Hull)
Back in the front bit of the '60's folk didn't set out to "do" Wainwrights.
Nobody 'd heard of 'em. Some of the books hadn't even been written,
not to mention other books, which can't be mentioned for that reason.
On top of that hols were meagre and wheels less round, so when G
and Judy hit Lakeland in '64 for a one-off week, they grabbed a peakful
of fist, 'cos they hadn't a clue what they were doing. First in the fist was Coniston Old Man, as in The Old Man of Coniston, which is a W, but was it then? You check .. Book Four! Date; 19th July 1964. It was Sunday without sun, but Lancashire's highest spot, (Oh yes it is!) was G's first proper thingy and a W too. From '66 to '79 Barnard Castle wheels got rounder and Lakes nearer, then '83 saw Skiddaw in Diane and G's Croft Farm garden. May '89 told of 46 W's G-unscaled, 14th .. the assault began. 19th July 1989, 25 years to the year, also month and day, 2 remained, Dow Crag, Brim Fell and Wednesday watched Gary Baum and Graham Tomlinson plunge naked into Goat's Water, while G saved his skin for a future bare beach and worried about getting up Dow. How? Route was crag, Easy Terrace they said. To come; wine, (by G) and "champers", (via G&G); plastic cups full on Brim. Next a sunny evening half mile stroll to G's twoth ascent of The Old Man.
First Wainwright, Coniston Old Man, 19th July 1964. Final Wainwright, Brim Fell, 19th July 1989.
COM summit, a view to muse on. Gene .. no more D taunt, as in did Dow yonks back. Graham .. here watched unofficial Bluebird break a record, (No! not an LP!). And was it really 20 years since Apollo 11? G had 20th, but it was after 8pm. Lunar time? P'raps still 19th in USA? Then pubwards .. Coniston's Sun Hotel and more Donald Campbell reminders. 4 Brim pics, 2 with COM in view. Click 'em up there!
Not a W, but is it Cumbrian Mountains' most westerly 2000 footer? OS Grid's no decider in close run cases, (Grid N ain't true N), as here with Great Borne. Needs Lat-Long to determine. More to come on this. Iron Crag's expanse has most westerly 2000ft contour, tho,4 deffo!

Ten in '70's,
only three of
accurate date,
then nowt 'til late '82 with D Arlecdon welcome to Cumbria.
25 years and 10 days of civilised knocking 'em off later, D
completed. Add on the '70's, though and she took 34½ + yr.
20th October 2007, a sunny Saturday and repeat ascents of
Great Carrs with crashed Halifax, Grey Friar with Matterhorn
resembler rock and Swirl How, where Gene and Martin still
hadn't been shaken off. All three headed for Wetherlam.
First Wainwright, Blencathra, March 1973.

Gowbarrow Fell, Martin's first Wainwright ascent by his own effort, was parentally summit rewarded with plastic binoculars! Previously he'd Wainwright summited, as in heaved up by non-own effort, e.g. Binsey, 7-8-83, (13 days), Bakestall, 30-8-83, (36 days) and Skiddaw, 28-10-83, (95 days). Currently he has 3 to go, by his own effort, and has had for 4 years. C'mon! Get on wi' it, Martin! Aha! At last! 26-7-13, one day after his 30th birthday and 35 days short of 27 years after his first Wainwright, Martin traversed Dow Crag and Brim Fell before meeting fiancée Anna, daughter Zoe, (grandad transported), and his mam & dad on Coniston Old Man. (See blue list.)
Graham and Gene's Wainwrights together
Graham, as in Tomlinson, as in Physics colleague of G at Cockermouth School, has been fell walking with Chemistry colleague since '85, opening their account with Blencathra. Wansfell was Graham's first Wainwright in 1966 and he finished with Great Mell Fell on 18-5-11. G was with him and they supposed that they must have been on nearly all the Wainwright summits together. After 3-6-11, 16-6-11 and 28-8-11, (see yellow left), a surprising list drawn up revealed 68 still outstanding! Vowing, as in, "We're not ticking 'em off, mind," they set about ticking 'em off. Stuff kept getting in the way, such as stuff, but they got there in the end, which was not an end to everything, just to their quest. On 31-7-14 they "did" Pikes Arthur's & Bonscale, which were 2 W's G+G unscaled, followed by a Loadpot Hill lunch, as in previously G+G scaled, before heading for Steel Knotts, also un-G+G-ed. Meanwhile Diane had hauled up Hallin, the intended last W, 2 Diane-built cakes, some quiche and red wine complete with expanded polystyrene "glasses", all to be three-way enjoyed overlooking lovely Ullswater. Many thanks to Diane. Hallin Fell saw Graham & Gene's completion of the Wainwrights together after a tad more than 29 years of co-fell-walking. It was no coincidence that the conclusion of the G+G Wainwright drive also saw Gene complete ascents of all Wainwrights at least twice ...
.... on Hallin Fell's summit. (See yellow list.)

Ordnance Survey Triangulation Clickable Picables
The map is not foolproof, except in obvious cases, e.g. Grike is clearly the most westerly Wainwright. Where there are contenders, as with the other three compass points, OS grid lines are not reliable, since they don't run parallel to lines of latitude and longitude. Grid references below are obtained by clicking up for Large Scale Mapping on , then hovering the cursor over the target summit at highest magnification. These are then converted to latitude and longitude using
Ordnance Survey

More Beautiful Figures
Have a scroll through these! The numbers unlock the answer to the Iron Crag question ......... and some.
None of the conclusions based on figures above has been checked in situ by GPS, but the most northerly, easterly, southerly and westerly Wainwrights respectively are: Binsey, Grey Crag, Dow Crag and Grike. The most northerly and easterly English 3000 footers are Skiddaw and Helvellyn respectively, while Scafell is both the most southerly and westerly. In the Cumbrian Mountains, (yea, okay, excluding Howgill Fells), Iron Crag is not the most westerly 2000 footer. Both summits of Great Borne are a touch wester. Most northerly and southerly Cumbrian 2000 footers are High Pike and White Maiden, while Harrop Pike, a subsidiary summit of Grey Crag, is most easterly. 2000 footers in all England? Most northerly and easterly: The Cheviot and Bleaklow Stones respectively. Most southerly and westerly goes to High Willhays, with a "No" to Yes Tor! Sorry!
A Word or Two then Count the Counties
Wainwright has various one-worders, (e.g. Catbells, Haystacks, Scafell), where OS has two, as in, 4 egg sample, Sca Fell, (cf. Scafell Pike). Note, though, what High Pike's View Indicator gets wrong,* (Ordnance Survey Clickable Picables up & right a bit). Can't be many OS pillars converted High-Wise-Pike-Wise, but if there're any intended in view-indicator-range of Cross Fell, it ain't Crossfell.* T' other clickable shows a ground level OS Triangulation Station, Blencathra summit. Wainwright fails to mention it and reckons ... "Nothing marks the highest point" ... ! One wonders, doesn't one? Either guide books outdate quickly ... or.........!
Okay! How about these nine? Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Hertfordshire, Essex, Greater London, Surrey, Sussex? What sets 'em apart from other English, nay British, counties is .... they each feature in both Western and Eastern Earth Hemispheres, as in Greenwich, (Prime), Meridian passes through 'em. These are proper, (pre '74) counties, o' course; not the ones to give not a toss about, most of which don't possess a toss; but some of the proper-uns, (Yorks e.g.) do possess Ridings, (or the equivalent thereof), Lincs, Cambs, Sussex, bits of which, having self-admin-status, ask, does the Zero-Long-Line split us? "That's your homework," says G and " Dunno" re Northamptonshire's Soke of Peterborough, which lies desperately close to Nought Degrees Long, but what about Middlesex? Good Grief! Was there ever a more important question? Is "Middlesex" really the average of Football and Embroidery,** where average means mean? Is the mean of Straight and Gay really Stray? "Dunno," says G, but old maps of Middlesex reveal that a titchy chunkette of Old-Style Mid-Sexy was lopped off by Greenwich's thingybob, before the entire county was lopped off by them as give the wrong kind of toss.
Given this info, and the fact that only Norfolk, Suffolk and Kent lie entirely within the Eastern Hemisphere, the question is ... what is the highest point in England, (Britain, UK, The British Isles), east of Greenwich? G reckons it's the highest point on the North Downs, Botley Hill, a Surrey summit of 882 ft. Trouble is finding it, 'cos OS shows its Trig Point at 876ft, but old maps show a higher bit near a water tower and recent confirmers have confirmed it. But what does "Near a water tower mean"? Apart from "Close to a tower of water", that is? This is shaping up to be the trickiest question since the one about a crossroads chicken. Well, actually, it wasn't any old bird, it was the chicken, but check out the figures below. Go on! 'S' really interesting!

At Botley Hill's latitude a degree of longitude represents a tad more than 44 miles on the ground. The figures suggest that Botley Hill Trig Point is 22-23 yards inside the Eastern Hemisphere, while everything around the water tower is west of Greenwich. If so the Trig Point gets its own back as England's highest point in the Eastern Hemisphere! But maybe needs checking ... c'mon you Surrey Surveyors, and don't neglect that other 265m contour near Paygate Cottage.
A degree of latitude is about 69 ground miles, and, at Cumbria's latitude, a degree of longitude represents about 40 miles. So 0.001 degrees equates to approx 120 yards north-south and around 70 yards east-west. Example: Binsey beats Longlands Fell as most northerly Wainwright by about 136 yards.
G thunk that England, (well, OK .... UK, s'pose!), in "owning" the Prime Meridian, would be one of an elite set of E/W Hemisphere Countries, which excludes USA. Not so. The E/W divide requires definition through the 0 and 180 degree longitude girdle, which, slices through Alaska's Aleutian Islands a fifth of a Big Circle from Botley Hill. 'Course any point on Earth lies on a Great Circle, which, 'course, divides the planet into two hemispheres. In fact, ('course), any point on Earth lies on a hugeous number of Great Circles, where hugeous = infinitude, so, ('course), the number of possible hemispheres is infinilimitless, and that's just on this planet. 'Course only the E/W and N/S really matter, the latter obeying the Equator. The worldatlas link, (below),*** takes you into the world of wemi-world, where wemi = demi = hemi = semi = half.

OK ... Let it be sorted ...
Already noted ... Cross Fell ... two words, not one ... but also ... Hesket Newmarket is two words, not three, Criffel has one "l", not two and everyone knows 1 January 2000 was the first day of the last year of the 2nd Millennium, not the first day of the third Millennium. Some distances pretty iffy too ... these apart it's a bonny bit of summit furniture.

There're folk with no job; sadder that than a boneless dog, or a horse of any sort. But worse; the running jobs of folk who run stuff that runs right. Nowt to do, unless ... change stuff. 1st Law Of Buggerin' About Wi' ... The amount of change is directly proportional to the number of jobs that would otherwise vanish up a redundant bum. April '74, (1st appropriately), 1st Law applied to counties. Check list below ... G "did" 8 & 11 last Westmorland day! Trouble with "new counties" ... no culture. Solution ... ignore 'em! So ... Yorks' goodly chunk of Howgill, (eponymous hamlet's West Riding), and feeling fingers one Bar t'at from Irish Sea. G footled his intended Howgills book ... a week's hol at Craggstone, (April '70), weather all sorts, included some intent on Crosdale Beck through cottage floor. Wainwright made G's (typed up) version superflumulous, so get W whinging over. His intro says; Westmorland has the bigger bit. Mm! Nine 2000 footers; 3 shared, 4 Yorks, 2 Westm'land. (Fell Head ... summit Yorks, county boundary on high shoulder). Also ... all Howgill streams feed Lune, dollocks admitted in Walk 19, where high point of Lune/Eden watershed Wild Boar Fell is, Knoutberry ain't. Still a good book ... tho' Howgills need only ridge-a-go-go plan & where to get on and off ... Tubular Fells if ever G saw one (some). If you ain't clocked Peter Burgess' map, follow the link, but
come back and read on. OS old 1 inch (89) mapped all
Howgill 'cept the dollocks bit, marked Standing Stone
on The Calf and predated 1st Law of BAW, so heights
make sense. The Horse, (of Bush Howe sort), seems
OS ignored, prob 'cos it's not CaCO3, ain't (wo)man-
made, and hasn't got a largely knob. G's list of summits
runs out where it gets daft. Omissions include, (is a
contradiction, but you know what G means), titchy
bumps, 'specially where the long northern ridges peter
out, but also on high ridges 'twixt bumps. 4 egg sample,
Over Sale, a bumplet near Docker Knott. G's Calf cairn
survived, ta muchly, 4 years minus, Yarlside et al pic's a
compilation, (y'can see t' join), and 1 Bar t'at, (= 8 miles
+ nudge), would be the origin of "Tad", but isn't.
Live London, love fells

Triangles represent peaks, as in summits, linked by ridges, as in lines, all of which can be walked freely without obstacle, or difficulty.
Indicates col, (clever eh?),
which can also be used to
freely walk, as in split infinitive.
Big letters in this colour can be freely walked in the direction of the letters. Across 'em is hard, 'cos they're streams. Just add "BECK" to each! (Saves space).
